Freiraum District — Regensburg-Nord
Courtyard neighbourhoods and shared public spaces for a district designed to evolve.
01Project context
An urban framework
that allows change.
Developed by our four-person team for Europan 18, Freiraum District proposes a mixed-use neighbourhood in Regensburg-Nord. Adaptable urban blocks, green courtyards and connected public spaces give the district a framework for change.
The task
The brief called for a new mixed-use district that connects existing neighbourhoods while respecting open land. Our proposal considers how neighbourhood life, landscape and everyday movement can form a coherent urban fabric.

Courtyards, blocks and a shared centre
Adaptable urban blocks surround shared green courtyards. A central meeting place and connected ground-floor spaces are intended to bring community uses into the everyday life of the district.
03
Landscape as a connected public space
Planting, lawns and spaces around water connect places for meeting, play and everyday recreation. The drawing shows the proposed character of this public landscape.
04
Connections across infrastructure
Walking and cycling routes connect with a mobility hub, park-and-ride and a proposed railway crossing. The diagram shows how the district could connect to its surroundings.
